Election Day 2008

As I sit here and watch the results roll in at 10:42 PM, With the electoral map citing 207 votes for Obama and 142 for McCain, I am near tears. We are so close to officially electing Barack Obama as our next President of the United States. Forget that we would be electing the first black President - I’m just rejoicing that we only have 3 months of George W. Bush left in office.

When George W. Bush ran for his first term in 2000, my close friends all warned me how horrible things were going to get. At the time, I didn’t understand much about life let alone politics. I only remember thinking that they were all overreacting. Eight years later, I wish that I could go back apologize to all of them for dismissing their comments so quickly. Unemployment rates are at an all time high, the economy is in the crapper, and we’re involved in a war we should have never started.

I’m extremely excited to hear of the large voter turnout across the country. I love watching the statistics on the exit polls that demonstrate the American people are finally paying attention. Problems like the economy and health care have taken the forefront as opposed to the fear of terrorism that the Republicans have relished in for two terms now. Don’t misunderstand me - I still believe in vigilance against terrorism, but I think the Republicans have taken it to an extreme. By the numbers of states that have turned from red to blue, many agree.

I hope I can stay awake enough to see the electoral map actually reach 270 for Barack Obama. I’m getting sleepy, and I feel sick, but this is history in the making. I’d love to be able to crack a bottle of beer open in celebration, a celebration for CHANGE!

Oh my little Jeff… don’t make it seem so long until Bush is out of office. It is, in fact, only 76 days until Inauguration Day. Please don’t make us have that douche bag in office any longer than he has been.
I am a Clinton, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama voter. Needless to say, I am one happy girl today. The last 8 years of turmoil were avoidable. So many innocent people lost their lives. So many Americans have unfortunately hit rock bottom and lost everything they had. Some took their own lives, as well as their loved ones lives because it seemed better than living this hell. America spoke yesterday, and they spoke very loud and proud. It was amazing to see how many voters actually exercised their right. I am so glad that it was so clear so early who the next President would be. I hope the Americans that were supporting McCain will see the good that will come from having President Obama in office. I look forward to a bright future, rather than the dismal one that was on the horizon if McCain/Palin were in office. I don’t think we, as a country, could have gone another 4-8 years under the same leadership as the past 8. Kudos to all who got out and exercised their right to vote, regardless of their candidate. I am quite optimistic that this is one of the greatest decisions that we, as Americans, have made even though all Americans do not currently agree with our President Elect. I am optimistic that the changes he will bring will unite our country and make us stronger than ever. We will get back a sense of security, economic stability, and pride for our leader and our country overall.
