I will make no secret that I am not a Sarah Palin fan. I wont knock her accomplishments in Alaska as Mayor and now Governor, but she is not ready for the White House. Really if John McCain were to die (God forbid) she will be commander in chief. What I dont understand is why Governor Palin was thrown into the circus of an election year and a vast majority of Republicans have treated her as if she is the best thing since sliced bread. John McCain could have chosen Linda Lingle, Christine Todd Whitman or M Jodi Rell, all Republican Governors (pervious or current) with meatier resumes. Why did Governor Palin dodge a simple question from Katie Couric like which publications she read to stay up to date on current events? Her response to the Gay question was the typical I have a “fill in the blank” friend, her use of the word choice and saying that she doesnt judge gay americans who choose, argh, I’ll stop there. The only person in this race who lacks experience or who isnt qualified is Sarah Palin for the White House is Sarah Palin. I cant wait to see the debate Thursday night, Jeff and I will have a lot to talk (and maybe laugh) about. And by the way, I told Jeff I thought the title of this entry was rather harsh.
When asked about global warming, not only did Mrs. Palin recognize it as a man-made issue, but she rightly suggested that Earth’s climate is an evolutionary sort of thing. Scientifically, she is correct. If you have studied geology and climate as I have, one of the basic principles that is taught is that the earth is moving in seven different directions. These different movements affect the climate of earth. Even if you observe the magnetic north and south poles, you will see that it has moved over 100 miles in the past century. Her argument makes sense.
She is pro-life. Who can argue against the importance of all life? Again, Mrs. Palin correctly recognized that in certain circumstances, such as rape or incest, a woman should be strongly encouraged to put the child up for adoption. She further emphasized that those situations are horrific; she provided an intelligent response. Further, she recognized that the theory of evolution is something that should be studied in schools as apart of the curriculum. Again, intelligent.
In terms of the gay community, her answer was direct, “I will not judge those people.” This is something that gays and lesbians have been starving for many years. The moment gay people can exist without feeling condemned by everyone, which includes other gays, the better off we will be in life. Most republicans do not support gay marriage, and they will tell you, unlike the democrats who are notorious for telling the gay community one thing yet doing something else.
Out of all the candidates, Mrs. Palin is the only one who has executive experience, and she is doing it while raising children. Can any of the male candidates say that? Neither McCain, Obama, nor Biden in all their collective years in Washington can boast such a claim. Yes, there were other female candidates, but the more I learn of this remarkable woman, the more I realize that she is what this country needs. I believe that those who think of her as an idiot are only kidding themselves. Our representation should be reflective of the population, which is over 50% female. Mrs. Palin is truer reflection of what our society is than what we see from our mostly male Congress, and that includes Obama, Biden, and McCain.
Mrs. Palin is more than ready to help McCain lead our nation through the mess the Democrats have gotten us in.
Did she feel the ‘morning after’ pill was a form of contraception, or did she feel it was an abortion? The way she first started to answer the question, she referred to it as a form of contraception – which is true. The ‘morning after’ pill is different than the RU-486 pill, an actual pill used for abortions. The morning after pill prevents sperm from firtilizing the egg. So why the have an issue with the ‘morning after’ pill?
But the biggest issue I had is that she referred to homosexuality as a choice. That alone, is a judgement – coming from someone who said she isn’t judging. Ugh! Are you for real with that bullshit?
Youre right the morning after pill is different than RU486 but I wonder if she (or most people) know the difference? I dont agree with abortions in any form, but an abortion is a personal choice that government and elected officials should stay out of. Im sick of this topic, there are far more pressinging things that need attention. The bottom line is women are going to have an abortion if they dont want a baby.
She’ll use the word “choose” in reference to homosexuality but prefers “options” when referring to abortions. I wonder if she ever asked her gay friend did she have the “option” of not being gay?
As far as the ‘morning after’ pill, I have heard so many different theories on this subject, so I will confess, my knowledge is limited. What I know of this pill, is that, right or wrong, many people associate it with abortion, which scares a great many people. I detest abortion as do many of my conservative as well as liberal friends. Abortion is a sensitive issue because of what it involves the killing of innocent babies. So, I can’t explain her answer or lack of an answer.
The gay issue has been the biggest hurdle of my life, and I am in constant awe of both you and Coley for seeing it as liberating. Gay issues and being gay has always been a source of consternation for me because I have never had any loving support from family as Coley has. In fact, in the twenty years I have been away from my home in North Carolina, I’ve only seen my parents a handful of times. The last time I saw my mother, I didn’t know who she was. This is because when they found out that I was gay, they told me I was going to hell and that it was as though I was never their son. My father told me in May 1991 that he never wanted to see me again because I was gay. Even when my grandmother was in the hospital with a broken hip, recently, my parents would not come to the hospital because I was there. And, when I learned that my cousin Scott and his partner were killed, one of the reasons was because one of the perpetrators of the murder believed that Scott and his partner were coming on to him. While I was at home I had to hear all the derogatory gay jokes because the only people who know I’m gay in my family are my parents and my sister. So, I wish to apologize to you for going crazy recently, but when one lives in an environment where feelings must be suppressed and there is no outlet, it can make one loopy. I can agree with your argument about Sarah Palin’s views on homosexuality; however, I must recognize that moments with national journalists are, for the most part, unscripted. We all can’t say the right things all the time. That said, I want to reiterate that I have much more respect for someone who doesn’t like me for being gay and will say it to my face rather than someone who will tell me it’s okay to be gay, but who, in turn, will do everything in their power to throw our rights back to the stone age, such as the democratic leadership has done.
What it looks like to me is that the liberal media is coming down on Mrs. Palin because she is a woman. For example, Saturday Night Live is making both Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton look like quacks, and that’s not fair. The people that should be the focus of comic satire are John McCain and Barack Obama. They are the ones, who are running for our nation’s highest office, but I understand the close relationship a vice president has with the presidency; it comes with the territory. Ultimately, however, it’s always been easy to mock women and our current media knows this.
As for the abortion issue…I don’t think any of you men should be allowed to comment on it. Not an issue you have to deal with. You will never know and understand the difficulties associated with the termination of a pregnancy. As for her stating the morning after pill is an abortion and then that it is contraception…more evidence that she will give as many sides of an issue as possible with one answer.
I’m not suprised that she pulled out her “gay friend” who isn’t her gay friend, just her good friend. Everyone has a gay friend when they need one for the press these days. I chose to be a republican but I sure did not choose to be gay.
Can’t wait for the debate tonight!
I agree with you on the abortion issue. I posted an entry (http://coleyco.net/2008/10/01/the-morning-after-pill-vs-ru486-the-abortion-pill.aspx) about the difference between the RU486 and The Morning After Pill because I dont think most people know the difference. Regardless of what you feel about either I think people need to know the difference. But youre right men need to stay out of this and stop using it for political gain.
The gay issue is annoying me too. A larger numer of my gays and lesbians are out at home and work and live ordinary lives. The shift in society is evident, Ellen is has a cosmetics contract, Rachel Maddow has her own show on CNN. The only thing gays and lesbians have CHOSEN in the past 40 years was to stop accepting negative portrayls, stereotypes and hiding. Will it ever be perfect, nope, but it will never be perfect for any group thats been subjected to prejudice or hate. People like Sarah Palin who “choose” minded thinking used to make me angry but now I just feel sorry for them.
I’d love for you to subscribe to my blog too, http://WWW.COLEYCO.NET, I’d love to hear your voice and opinions.
