I work for Beliefnet and I must have had this arguement over a hundred times. Usually, it starts out with a variation on "Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship!". Dictionary definitions are ignored, words are twisted pretzel-like.

I stand by what I've always believed: If it worships something, it's a religion which is why atheism and evolution aren't religions. Sometimes they then argue that those two worship the self but really, that devalues the concept of worship and is just plain silly.

I think his argument is interesting on another level, though: religious people are distancing themselves from the word "religion". Today "religious" is turning into a pejorative the way "liberal" was a decade ago.

As another data point, one of the most popular ways for religious people to discredit atheism is by claiming it's just another religion, and what does that say about popular opinion of religion?
